Tomsk Administrations Attempt's to Stop Lesbian and Gay Festival Prove to be in Vein

Side by Side LGBT International Film Festival continuing its 2011 regional tour in Russias provinces came up against strong opposition from authorities in Tomsk, a city located in Siberia. The third of such regional film festivals (two having successfully taken place in Novosibirsk, 19 22 May and Kemerovo, 20 22 May, 2011) Tomsk proved itself to be not as tolerant as its neighbouring Siberian counterparts and hours prior to the start of the festival venues: the Academy of Photography and Hotel Bon Apart, received telephone calls from authorities (as yet unidentified individuals) threatening them with measures against them if they continued to support the film festival.

Stephen Fry Lends Support to Side by Sides HIV & Us Special Event Scheduled During Russias Week Against Homophobia, 5th 11th April, 2010.

As part of Russias Week Against Homophobia running from the 5th to the 11th April Side by Side LGBT International Film Festival in Saint Petersburg has organized a Special Event focusing on the issue of HIV and AIDS. Side by Side over the course of two evenings, on the 5th and 7th April, will be screening the critically acclaimed two part documentary HIV & Me written and presented by Stephen Fry. There will additionally be after film discussions with an invited panel of expert guests. On the 10th April a workshop on HIV Prevention will be held.

Russias First Annual LGBT Film Festival Side by Side Sets its Sites Further and goes Nationwide in 2010.

In 2010 Side by Side LGBT International Film Festival will move beyond the confines of the Russian North West and into other regions across the Federation. Staggered throughout the year are four three-day film festivals in various locales stretching as far as Siberia. The regional program will be a rich mixture of documentary, features and shorts providing audiences with the opportunity to view films from the October 2009 Side by Side LGBT Film Festival which took place in Saint Petersburg. To run alongside film screenings is a strong discussion programme. Issues concerning coming out, discrimination, rights of LGBT people, same sex families and transgender will be tackled. A panel of invited experts, yet to be announced, are to participate. Levels of homophobia in Russian society remain incredibly high, stated festival founder Manny de Guerre, and to take Side by Side to other towns and cities where intolerance and hatred towards LGBT people are openly and violently expressed is an imperative.

Saint Petersburg Ombudsman, Igor Mikhailov, meets with Organizers of Side by Side LGBT Film Festival

Ombudsman for Human Rights in St. Petersburg, Igor Mikhailov has offered to lead a round table discussion with the organizers of the LGBT Film Festival Side by Side. According to the Ombudsmans official website the proposed meeting will address the goals, vision and the program of the film festival, which will help: "to remove unnecessary excitement around the event."

Side by Side Organizing Committee Expresses Regret Due to NTV

The organizing committee of the Side by Side LGBT international film festival expresses its regret that NTV and its news correspondent Viktor Chernoguz were unable to objectively cover the events of the festival. On 28 October, Professor Igor Kon, well known for his defense of the civil rights of the LGBT community, was scheduled to present his new book The Boy is Father to the Man at the Bukvoyed chain bookstore on Vosstaniia Square in Saint Petersburg. However, the interest shown by the NTV news crewand a group of shaven-headed men who showed up for the presentation of this popular science book forced the organizers to cancel Professor Kons presentation.

Second Attempt to Hold Side by Side LGBTInternational Film Festival Saint Petersburg

Side by Side will attempt to hold its second LGBT film festival in Saint Petersburg, Russia, between 23 31 October, 2009. More than twenty fiction and documentary films from Germany, Spain, France, Britain, Israel, New Zealand, Canada and the USA make up the competition programme for this years Festival. A mixture of old and new, it will also be possible to view unseen features, documentaries and shorts from the 2008 Side by Side film programme, which were made impossible to view due to closure of venues by fire inspectors.
